March at Bella Viva Orchards: Go Mad Over Our Pistachios!

March Madness is just about upon us. That means for those of you basketball fans, it’s time to gather up heaps of healthy goodies before tuning in to this sporting event. Before you settle in for hours of TV, we say it’s the perfect time of year to get out of the house and take in some March Marvelousness. Get out and see the blossoms on the trees. Listen to the singing birds and feel the lush young grass beneath your feet. And if you’re lucky enough to live near a Pistachio orchard, check out the grape-like clusters, known as drupes, that hang from the trees. These clusters start out green and eventually turn red when the precious Pistachios get ready for harvest. Whether or not you see those Pistachio trees, now’s the time to think of yummy healthy green things to eat. This is where the peerless Pistachio comes in! We think of the amazing Pistachio as an MVP of healthy foods.

While many of us think of Pistachios as nuts, they’re actually edible seeds of the Pistachio tree, but they’re generally considered to be nuts for culinary and dietary purposes. Pistachios have roots in Western Asia and the Middle East and experts tell us that they’ve been eaten for over 8,000 years! While this seed has an ancient past, it’s a relative newcomer to California. According to Keep California Farming, California’s first commercial Pistachio crop was in 1976! Pistachios, where have you been all this time?! Since the ‘70s, California has become the world’s #2 producer of Pistachios. And while Pistachio trees generally take seven years to start producing, it’s worth the wait, ‘cause those trees live a long time and produce year after year! Another reason to consider them MVPs, huh!?

We love Pistachios because they taste great, they’re fun to eat and their natural color is cool, but experts at the American Heart Association and the Mayo Clinic make them even more crave-able by telling us some of the health benefits linked to enjoying Pistachios. Call ‘em seeds or call ‘em nuts, it’s time to break out those Pistachios and enjoy them through March Madness, St. Patrick’s Day or any day! We want to share our love by offering our Roasted Lightly Salted Pistachios as this month’s web special! Yes friends, you’ll get 25 percent off if you buy two or more one-pound bags!
